Liquid base, 2025

In her series Liquid Base, Anna Bochkova examines the influence of past modernist utopias on our present, inspired by Bruno Taut’s social housing and his vision of “Alpine architecture.” The shapes of the wax sculptures are reminiscent of custom-made panels from prefabricated housing estates, but they have their own unique proportions, which allow us to experience the past in a new way. Fragments of text from Bochkova’s childhood are enclosed in the translucent bodies, while glass, cardboard, and other materials merge with the wax. The wax preserves the traces of movement, space, and memory, creating dense and complex structures.

The works also draw on McLuhan's idea of architecture as a “third skin” and take into account Flusser's thoughts on migration and new forms of living. In this way, the sculptures become a living
archive that combines physical experience, emotional memory, and social history. Through their proportions and materiality, they question how Taut's utopias of the past still affect us today and how we can experience them on our own skin.
